From Profit-Driven to People-Centered: Making the Shift to Just Marketing®

In today’s fast-paced digital world, profit-driven marketing often takes center stage, promising quick wins and rapid growth. But at what cost?

The gist: Just Marketing® is ethical, inclusive, and accessible, so your audience feels supported and your business grows sustainably. Shifting from profit-driven to people-centered marketing means trading pressure tactics like fake scarcity for honest, relationship-building practices. Start by auditing your current marketing, redefining success around trust, aligning choices with your values, and inviting your audience’s feedback.

Enter Just Marketing®, a people-centered approach that prioritizes ethics, inclusivity, and accessibility. It challenges the traditional profit-first mindset and instead focuses on fostering long-term relationships built on trust and respect.

This blog will explore how shifting from profit-driven to people-centered marketing not only aligns with values-driven business practices but also paves the way for sustainable success.

Ready to create a marketing strategy that feels as good as it performs?

What’s Wrong with Profit-Driven Marketing?

Profit-driven marketing is a strategy that places revenue generation above all else. While this approach might seem logical for businesses focused on growth, it often sacrifices ethical considerations, inclusivity, and trust in the process. By prioritizing short-term financial gains, profit-driven marketing overlooks the human element of business – treating customers as mere transactions rather than individuals with unique needs and values.

Key Issues with Profit-Driven Marketing

The problems with Profit-Driven Marketing: Short term gains over long-term relationships, overuse of manipulative tactics, exclusion of marginalized communities, negative brand perception and consumer mistrust. Icon of a caution sign and a stop sign.
  1. Short-Term Gains Over Long-Term Relationships
Profit-driven marketing frequently relies on aggressive tactics to achieve immediate results. This might include pushing for high-pressure sales or prioritizing flashy campaigns that lack substance. While these efforts can deliver quick wins, they fail to build lasting connections with your audience, ultimately leading to customer churn and diminishing loyalty.

  2. Overuse of Manipulative Tactics with Profit-Driven Marketing
Tactics such as artificial scarcity (“only 2 left in stock!”), urgency (“offer ends in 3 hours!”), and FOMO (fear of missing out) are hallmarks of profit-driven marketing. While these approaches may drive initial action, they can leave customers feeling deceived or regretful, which damages trust in the long run.

  3. Exclusion of Marginalized Communities
When inclusivity and accessibility are afterthoughts – or completely overlooked – marketing campaigns risk alienating marginalized groups. Profit-driven strategies often prioritize a generalized, one-size-fits-all approach that neglects the unique needs of diverse communities, creating barriers that limit engagement and connection.

  4. Negative Brand Perception and Consumer Mistrust
As consumers become more aware of manipulative and exclusionary tactics, they are quick to call out brands that prioritize profits over people. This can lead to public backlash, reputational damage, and lost opportunities for meaningful engagement with values-aligned audiences.

Imagine: A brand launches a new product with a countdown timer and promises an “exclusive, limited-time offer.” Excited by the urgency, customers rush to buy, only to discover days later that the product is still available at the same price – or worse, discounted even further. This bait-and-switch tactic leaves customers feeling cheated and hesitant to trust the brand again.

Profit-driven marketing may deliver short-term wins, but it often does so at the cost of long-term sustainability, trust, and inclusivity. The question isn’t just, “What will make the sale today?” but rather, “What will create lasting value for our audience tomorrow?”

What is Just Marketing®?

Just Marketing includes ethical marketing, inclusive marketing, and accessible marketing.

Just Marketing® is a justice-centered marketing approach for impact-driven businesses. Just Marketing® is ethical, inclusive, and accessible, so your audience feels supported and your business grows sustainably.

Unlike traditional profit-driven strategies, Just Marketing® recognizes that kindness and integrity are not just good ethics… they’re good business.

Because kindness is a profitable marketing strategy.

Core Pillars of Just Marketing®

1. Ethical Marketing

Ethical marketing ensures that every interaction with your audience is transparent, responsible, respectful, and fair. These four cornerstones guide decisions to build trust and authenticity:

  • Transparent: Be clear and honest about what you offer, avoiding misleading or manipulative tactics.
  • Responsible: Take accountability for the impact of your messaging and campaigns.
  • Respectful: Value your audience’s time, intelligence, and needs.
  • Equitable: Ensure fair treatment and access for all.

2. Inclusive Marketing

Inclusive marketing goes beyond token representation to create campaigns that genuinely embrace and celebrate diversity. This involves:

  • Embracing Diversity: Showcase a wide range of identities, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Checking Biases: Regularly review your content to identify and address implicit or explicit biases.
  • Dismantling Stereotypes: Avoid oversimplified portrayals or harmful clichés.
  • Being Culturally Responsive: Engage authentically with cultural nuances and contexts.
  • Avoiding Appropriation: Respectfully appreciate, rather than exploit, cultural elements.
  • Being Trauma-Informed: Ensure messaging is sensitive and avoids triggering or harmful language.

3. Accessible Marketing

Accessibility ensures that your marketing can be experienced and enjoyed by everyone, including individuals with disabilities. Focus on the following areas to make your content inclusive:

  • Visual Accessibility: Provide alt text for images, use high-contrast designs, and ensure readability for all.
  • Auditory Accessibility: Include captions and transcripts for audio or video content.
  • Motor Accessibility: Design interfaces that accommodate a range of physical abilities.
  • Cognitive Accessibility: Simplify navigation and content to support diverse cognitive needs.

Just Marketing® makes your business more ethical and more effective. By centering your strategies on justice, ethics, inclusivity, and accessibility, you’re not only building trust and loyalty but also differentiating your brand in a way that profit-driven competitors can’t replicate.

How Do You Shift to Just Marketing®?

Transitioning from a profit-driven mindset to a people-centered approach isn’t an overnight process, but it’s a worthwhile investment for both your business and your audience. Here’s how you can start embracing Just Marketing® principles today:

Make the shift to Just Marketing: 1 - Audit your current practices. 2 - Redefine success. 3 - Align with your values. 4 - Embrace storytelling and education. 5 - Involve your audience.

Step 1: Audit Your Current Practices

Take a hard look at your existing marketing strategies to identify areas where profit-driven tactics might overshadow people-centered ones.

  • Ask Yourself: Are you prioritizing quick sales over building relationships?
  • Evaluate:
    • Ethics: Are your campaigns honest and respectful?
    • Inclusivity: Does your content resonate with a diverse audience?
    • Accessibility: Is your marketing easily understood and navigable by people of all abilities?

By recognizing gaps and areas for improvement, you’ll create a clear starting point for change.

Step 2: Redefine Success

Success in Just Marketing® goes beyond revenue metrics. It focuses on the impact your business has on people and communities.

  • Shift Your Focus:
    • From click-through rates to meaningful engagement.
    • From sales numbers to building trust and loyalty.
    • From profits to creating positive change.
  • Consider measuring metrics like community involvement, repeat customers, and feedback from your audience.

Step 3: Align with Your Values

Your marketing should reflect the values that matter most to you and your brand.

  • Incorporate Values into Decisions: Use your ethical principles as a filter for all marketing efforts, ensuring that campaigns align with inclusivity, accessibility, and fairness.
  • Be Vocal: Share your commitment to ethical practices with your audience. Transparency about your values fosters trust and encourages accountability.

Step 4: Embrace Storytelling and Education

People-centered marketing thrives on connection. Instead of focusing solely on selling, use your platform to share stories and educate your audience.

  • Tell Stories: Highlight real experiences – your own or those of your customers – that demonstrate your brand’s impact.
  • Educate: Offer actionable advice, resources, or insights that genuinely help your audience.
By shifting the narrative from “Look what I’m selling!” to “Here’s how I can help,” you’ll create deeper connections with your audience.

Step 5: Involve Your Audience

Your audience is one of your greatest assets in the journey toward Just Marketing®. By seeking their input, you can ensure your efforts resonate and include diverse perspectives.

  • Gather Feedback: Ask for opinions, especially from individuals in marginalized or underserved communities.
  • Act on Insights: Use the feedback to refine your campaigns and ensure they’re accessible and inclusive.

Engaging your audience in the process doesn’t just enhance your marketing – it strengthens your relationship with the people you serve.

By taking these steps, you’ll begin to transition from a profit-driven approach to a people-centered one that aligns with your values, builds trust, and fosters sustainable growth.

What Are the Benefits of Just Marketing®?

Benefits of Just Marketing for your audience: builds trust and loyalty, and creates a more inclusive and supportive community. For your business: fosters sustainable growth, differentiates your brand in a crowded market, and aligns with personal and professional values.

Making the shift from profit-driven to people-centered marketing is not just a feel-good decision – it’s a strategic one that benefits both your audience and your business.

By prioritizing ethics, inclusivity, and accessibility, you’re not just creating better marketing – you’re fostering trust, building meaningful relationships, and contributing to a more just and equitable business landscape.

It’s important to remember that this shift takes time. Change is a process, and every small step you take toward embracing Just Marketing® principles brings you closer to your goals of sustainable growth and deeper connections with your audience.

Begin by conducting a quick audit of your current marketing practices. Ask yourself:

FAQs

What is Just Marketing®?

Just Marketing® is ethical, inclusive, and accessible, so your audience feels supported and your business grows sustainably. Created by marketing strategist Meg Brunson, it’s a justice-centered approach to marketing for impact-driven businesses. Read the full guide to Just Marketing®.

What is profit-driven marketing?

Profit-driven marketing is a strategy that puts revenue above everything else, often leaning on pressure tactics like fake scarcity and countdown timers. It can bring quick sales, though it tends to wear down trust and loyalty over time. People who feel rushed or tricked into buying are less likely to return or refer others.

What is people-centered marketing?

People-centered marketing focuses on the needs, experiences, and long-term relationships of the people you serve. It uses honest messaging, welcomes a diverse audience, and makes content easy for everyone to access. Success is measured by trust, repeat clients, and referrals alongside revenue. Learn how to build a marketing funnel rooted in consent.

Is ethical marketing actually profitable?

Yes. Ethical marketing builds the trust that leads to repeat clients, referrals, and word-of-mouth, which tend to be steadier sources of income than one-time sales. Being known for your values also helps your business stand out in a crowded market. Learn how to measure success beyond vanity metrics.

What are some examples of manipulative marketing tactics?

Common examples include fake scarcity (“only 2 left!” when there are plenty), countdown timers that reset, guilt-trip copy, and “limited-time” prices that never actually change. These tactics can push a quick yes while leaving people feeling misled. Honest details about real deadlines and availability build far more lasting trust.

How do I start shifting my business to Just Marketing®?

Begin with a quick audit of your current marketing, looking for pressure tactics, gaps in representation, and accessibility barriers. Pick one or two changes to start with, like adding alt text or rewriting a high-pressure sales email. Small, steady updates add up quickly.

Want a way to respond to objections that feels lik Want a way to respond to objections that feels like you?

When a potential client hesitates, it's tempting to reach for a rehearsed comeback. Instead, try this four-step approach that’s grounded in empathy, easy to remember, and ADHD-friendly.

1. Acknowledge
Start by validating their concern. Listening comes first.
Try: "That totally makes sense. Thank you for being honest."

2. Ask
Get curious and invite them to share more.
Try: "What information would help you feel more confident in your decision?"

3. Affirm
Remind them their agency matters.
Try: "It's okay to take your time. I'm not going anywhere."

4. Align - *only if it's a true fit!
If you believe your offer can help and their hesitation comes from a misunderstanding, gently connect the dots between your work and their goals.
Try: "From what you've shared, it sounds like this could give you the structure you've been craving. Want to explore what that could look like together?"

That fourth step comes with an asterisk for a reason. Sometimes the most ethical move is recognizing when an offer isn't the right match and pointing someone toward a better resource. That kind of honesty is how referrals and raving fans are born.

Bonus tip for my neurodivergent friends: write a few go-to responses in your own words and practice them out loud until they feel natural. Having language ready can calm your nervous system when an objection pops up mid-call.

Find examples for…
- "I can't afford it,"
- "I need to think about it," and
- "I'm not sure this will work for me,"
at MegBrunson.com/handle-objections

Which step feels hardest for you?

For me, it used to be Affirm, because staying patient with my own fear of rejection took practice.

ID: Title, 'How to Respond To Objections Without Shame or Pressure,' four overlapping curved arrows in pink, orange, yellow, and green connect labeled steps: acknowledge, affirm, ask, and align (only if it's a true fit).'

“Be neutral to stay safe.”

And silence serves the status quo.

I’m not here to market around injustice.

Traditional sales training teaches us to "bust thr Traditional sales training teaches us to "bust through" objections before a potential client can slip away.

The scripts sound something like:
– "Can you put it on a credit card?"
– "This price goes up at midnight!"
– "How much is it costing you NOT to solve this?"

Those lines lean on shame and urgency to force a yes. For neurodivergent folks, people with trauma histories, or anyone who's been pressured into decisions before, they land as a red flag. The trust you worked so hard to build can evaporate in one sentence.

Here's a gentler way to look at it: an objection is information. When someone says "I can't afford it right now" or "I don't have the time," they're protecting their budget and their energy.

Thoughtful, mission-driven people make decisions carefully, and that care deserves respect.

A few mindset shifts that help:

– Treat hesitation as an invitation to get curious. Ask what would help them feel confident.

– Let "no" and "not yet" be complete answers. People who come back later arrive from trust, and they tend to stick around.

– Give yourself permission to pause. If real-time objections spike your rejection sensitivity, try: "Let me think about that and get back to you. I want to give you a thoughtful answer."

Kindness and effectiveness can live in the same sales conversation. Clarity and confidence in your offer do the heavy lifting.

I broke down how to respond to real objections, with example language you can adapt to your own voice, on the blog: MegBrunson.com/handle-objections

Now I'm curious: what's the most cringe-worthy "objection-busting" line you've ever heard?

(Or used! Zero judgment here. We've all been handed those scripts.)

1. Write like you talk
Contractions and everyday language are welcome here. A line like "I hope this brings a little more ease into your day" feels warm and human.

2. Lead with empathy and autonomy
Offer your tools as options. "Take what fits and leave the rest" is one of my favorite phrases for exactly this reason.

3. Honor neurodiversity and capacity
Short paragraphs and one clear next step per email make reading easier on every kind of brain.

4. Be inclusive by default
Greetings like "Hey friend" or "Hey there" invite everyone in. Leave room for the wide range of lives your readers are living.

"Only 3 spots left!"
"Offer ends at midnight!"
(Spoiler: it was still there the next morning.)

For a lot of us, especially neurodivergent and values-driven folks, that kind of welcome sets off every alarm bell we've got. It also leaves plenty of mission-driven business owners wondering whether email marketing is worth the ick at all.

Good news is, your welcome sequence can be one of the kindest corners of your whole business.

Think of it as greeting new subscribers the way you'd greet a friend walking through your front door. You say hello and let them know what to expect. Then you trust them to decide what happens next.

That's the heart of a Just Marketing® welcome sequence. It centers:

– Transparency about what you'll send and how often

– Autonomy, so readers choose their own path (unsubscribe button included, zero guilt attached)

– Accessibility through plain language and alt text

– Inclusion that shows your people exactly who this space is for

Bonus for my ADHD crew: once it's written, it keeps showing up for you. Your welcome sequence handles the introductions while you save your energy for everything else on your plate. Consistency, on autopilot, with your values baked right in!

Trust builds conversions. When people know you're Trust builds conversions. When people know you're not trying to manipulate them, they stick around longer, engage more, and buy when they're genuinely ready instead of when a countdown timer scared them into it.

Aligned leads convert at a higher quality than volume-driven ones. A consent-based funnel might bring you fewer names on your list, and that's a feature, not a flaw. Those are the people who resonate with your actual values, respond to your emails, and often become long-term clients or collaborators.

Slower doesn't mean less successful. Consent-based marketing tends to move at a more sustainable pace, which works especially well if you're managing ADHD, chronic illness, caregiving, or just plain burnout. That pace gives you room for thoughtful tweaks and deeper connection instead of a constant chase for the next conversion.

So yes, it converts. It just measures success on a timeline that respects your energy and your people's autonomy, instead of one built for urgency and burnout.

A consent-based funnel isn't some abstract philoso A consent-based funnel isn't some abstract philosophy - it's five stages you can build one at a time.

Start with clarity and intention. Before you build anything, get honest about what you're offering and why, so your funnel is rooted in your values instead of a template you found online.

Create a welcome opt-in that stands on its own. Your freebie should be genuinely useful, even if someone never buys another thing from you.

Design a nurture sequence that's actually transparent. Tell people what they signed up for, how often you'll show up, and how to leave whenever they want.

Make your sales process optional, not forceful. Invite people to buy. Skip the fake scarcity and the guilt-trip subject lines entirely.

Maintain consent well beyond the funnel. Check in periodically, make unsubscribing painless, and keep showing up with care.

Five stages.

The blog breaks down each stage with specific tips (plus accessibility notes for making your opt-ins more inclusive)...

October is here, bringing pumpkin spice, cozy swea October is here, bringing pumpkin spice, cozy sweaters, and a whole lot of heart.

While the leaves are changing, October is a month to raise awareness, honor resilience, and, of course, embrace a little spooky season fun.

Here are some of the moments and observances that make October so meaningful:

World Mental Health Day (October 10) - This day is a global reminder of the importance of mental health. Share resources, open up conversations, and encourage your community to prioritize their well-being. Because mental health matters every single day.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day (October 12) - This observance honors the history, culture, and resilience of Indigenous peoples. It’s a time to amplify Indigenous voices, support their work, and reflect on how we can stand in solidarity with their communities.

Halloween (October 31) - Whether you’re into creepy costumes, candy corn (love it or hate it?), or just a good excuse to watch Hocus Pocus again, Halloween is all about embracing creativity and fun. Bonus: It’s also a great marketing opportunity to show your playful side!

October offers endless opportunities for impactful content. Whatever you choose, focus on authenticity and connection.

The Inclusive Holiday Content Bundle is packed with ideas and inspiration to help you create thoughtful, inclusive marketing content for October and beyond. It’s your secret weapon for celebrating meaningfully and authentically.
