A Just Marketing® Guide to Emojis and Assistive Technology

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 2.2 billion people worldwide have some form of vision impairment.

Another estimated 253 million people experience severe vision impairment or total blindness.

That’s a huge portion of the world population that may need to use inclusive technology like screen readers and/or text-to-speech programs to navigate the digital world.

It’s a huge part of the population. Yet, it is something that able-bodied individuals who do not live with any form of vision impairment don’t think about as often as they should — particularly when marketing their business online.

It comes down to something as simple as emojis. To many, it’s just a cute little smiley face being used in place of a bullet point. To someone who accesses your content with a screen reader, it’s a headache that limits their accessibility.

Walking Our Talk

As Just Marketers, we are always learning. It’s the only way to truly embody Just Marketing® practices! Admitting where you may have gone wrong, learning from it, and doing things differently the next time around.

So, let’s talk emojis — shall we?

Excessive use of emojis makes it extremely challenging for the visually impaired, who use screen readers and/or text-to-speech programs to access information.

This is not to say that you should stop using them entirely, but there are a few different ways that you can do so in a way that is far more accessible.

Emojis Are Cool, But…

Emojis are always a great way to make your messaging more personal; I know I love them. However, to make your marketing more accessible, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Never Use Emojis to Replace Words

When you use emojis to replace words,  screen readers only read the alt-description of the emojis. It does not clearly translate what you mean to the visually impaired. You can totally use emojis to enhance the experience of your content, but words should still be used to clearly convey the full meaning of what you want to say.

Not Repeating Emojis

Repeating emojis or using too many emojis in a row can confuse screen readers. This, in turn, can lead to confusion in the message you are trying to convey with people using screen readers. Overall, it results in a poor user experience. On average, limit to three emojis per post or message when necessary. Anything more makes it time-consuming and annoying to have to listen to screen readers reading out a bunch of emojis.

Text Before Emoji

Like dinner before dessert, your emojis should always come after the text. Not before, not in the middle of words, AFTER. Using emojis in the middle of a sentence will confuse screen readers, which will read the alt-text as a part of the sentence. This translates into using emojis as bullet points as well (not recommended).

Keeping it Simple

When it comes to how to use emojis to ensure you create accessible content, simplicity is key.

Avoid Ambiguous Emojis

Some emojis can mean different things to different people in different contexts. Take this emoji, for example: 🙏

This looks like someone praying and raising hands in worship. It also looks like two people high-fiving. If different people interpret the emoji differently, then they will not have an equitable experience consuming your content.

Emojis > Emoticons

If you were born prior to 1990, you probably remember emoticons quite well! They are the ones that are created using semicolons, brackets and the like. So, for example, you would create an emoticon smiley face like this 🙂

These are not ideal as they do not have alt-text accompanying them, whereas emojis do. The alt-text is what allows screen readers to interpret the emojis, so they are always the superior choice!

Emoji Color Matters

Now, this one is a little bit nuanced. But you will see why it matters:

Consider Color Contrast

Light emojis on a white background are hard to see/identify. The same is true for dark emojis on a black background. Because some users prefer dark mode, it’s important to ensure we choose emojis that will be visible on both light and dark backgrounds —which is why yellow emojis are often the best option over skin-tone emojis.

Customizable Emojis

It can be tempting to change the color of customizable emojis. Don’t. Why? Every unique icon gets descriptor information. The longer the description, the longer anyone using a screen reader has to listen before they get back to the content they came for.

For example, a standard, yellow thumbs-up emoji reads as :+1: but if you add a skin tone, it changes to :+1::skin-tone-5:, which will often just send folks searching for content that doesn’t have so many annoying emojis to deal with!

Where Emojis Should Never Live

When used sparingly and in the right location, emojis can definitely add a certain something to content. With that said, there are a few places you should avoid placing emojis altogether!

Before Your Precious CTA

All important information in your content should go before emojis. If you want to use an emoji somewhere in your call to action, be sure to put it after the text. Sometimes folks will simply tune out when screen readers start to read out excessive emoji descriptions, so you want to make sure that you get the most pertinent information to them before that happens.

In Your Twitter Name

Adding an emoji in your Twitter name will make it confusing for anyone who is visually impaired to actually capture the name when utilizing tools like screen readers. This is because a screen reader transcribing an emoji in your name will make it unnecessarily long. NOTE: (Your name is different from your @ handle)

If you’re ever confused about any of this, you can visit Emojipedia to see how screen readers will read specific emojis.

Conclusion

Use this as your checklist before posting your content. Make sure:

  • You used emojis in moderation (less than 3 per message/post)
  • You did not use emojis as bullet points
  • There are no emojis in the middle of a sentence in your content
  • You used default yellow emojis unless skin color is necessary for context
  • You double-checked emoji descriptions on emojipedia.org

Mina said she never sweats handing off an important marketing decision to me - because she trusts my conscience as much as my expertise.

That's not something I take lightly. When someone trusts you with their brand, their message, their mission - that's a sacred kind of partnership.

Just Marketing isn't just a strategy. It's a commitment to showing up with integrity, every single time.

In business, in leadership, in marketing - neutral In business, in leadership, in marketing - neutrality protects power and perpetuates harm.

And yes, it’s uncomfortable…

…to speak up.
…to get it wrong.
…to be the first in your industry to take a stand.

But discomfort is not danger.
In fact, it’s often the first step toward justice.

At Just Marketing®, we believe:
~ Your values must be visible
~ Your content is a vehicle for impact
~ And your silence can be louder than your words

This isn’t about being perfect.
It’s about being present - and willing to grow, speak, and act.

The world doesn’t need more “neutral” leaders.
It needs brave ones.

You got this.

There will come a time when you miss a week of pos There will come a time when you miss a week of posting on social.
Maybe a few weeks.

Here's what I want you to do about it... nothing.

No explanation post.
No "hey, I've been MIA" caption.
No public apology for being a human being with a full life.

Just post. Pick up where you left off and keep going.

Your audience is living their own full lives. Most of them didn't notice the gap. The ones who did care about you - not your posting schedule.

The part that actually causes damage isn't the gap itself. It's the guilt that makes the gap longer. Every day you don't post starts to feel like evidence that you're bad at this, that you'll never be consistent, that everyone noticed and is judging you for it...

None of that is true.

Here's what actually gets you back on track:

1. Go back to the smallest version of your plan.

One post, and one short engagement block.... That's it for the first week back. Let the momentum rebuild before you pile anything else on.

2. Use a batching session as your re-entry point.

Block an hour, create a handful of posts across your content categories, and schedule them. One focused session and the gap is already behind you.

3. Remember that consistency isn't a streak. It's a practice.

The goal was never perfection... it was a system sustainable enough that the gaps get shorter over time, and easy enough to return to that they stop feeling catastrophic.

If you didn't need to hear this today, save it for when you do! 💕

Slowing down your marketing takes a plan, not just Slowing down your marketing takes a plan, not just good intentions…

1. Start by auditing your funnel for pressure points - the moments where a first email pitches too hard or a sales page leans on scarcity instead of support.

2. Warm up your audience with stories and behind-the-scenes content before you ever pitch.

3. Offer low-stakes ways to connect, like a free checklist or a workshop invite, so people can stay in your world without pressure.

4. Transparency about your process builds the kind of safety that makes a "yes" feel grounded instead of impulsive.

5. Comments, saves, shares, and thoughtful replies count as real signals of momentum, even before a sale happens.

6. And building systems that fit your brain - templates, batching, realistic goals - is what makes this rhythm sustainable instead of another thing to burn out on.

Which step are you starting with?

Look at your funnel and ask which column describes Look at your funnel and ask which column describes it…

Rushing cold leads toward a sale usually leaves you with fake urgency, inflated ad spend, and clients who ghost the second scope creep shows up.

None of that is a personal failing… the method itself is broken.

Pacing with intention flips the script. Trust gets built before any ask happens. Your audience gets consent-based decision-making instead of a countdown timer.

And the clients who stick around through your emails, blog posts, and social content? They say yes because it's right for them, not because they felt cornered.

Just Marketing® isn't a slower version of hustle culture. It's a full realignment… centering consent, honoring accessibility, and building equity into every touchpoint, so the people who choose to work with you are choosing it freely.

Cold traffic doesn't become committed clients over Cold traffic doesn't become committed clients overnight…

If you've ever felt weird about pushing a sale within 24 hours of someone finding your page, that feeling has a name: values clash.

Marketing works a lot like dating…

Nobody wants a stranger to walk up and ask for a commitment before the "getting to know you" part even happens. Your audience deserves the same courtesy - especially the neurodivergent and processing-time-needing folks in your community who tune out the second urgency kicks in.

Slowing down isn't the same as doing less. It's choosing aligned action over anxious urgency, and building an audience that sticks around because they actually want to, not because a countdown timer told them to.

Consider this your permission slip: pace your marketing with intention, and watch what happens when trust does the selling for you.

An onboarding sequence doesn't need a dozen emails An onboarding sequence doesn't need a dozen emails or a complicated automation build. It only needs four things, each done with intention…

1. Start with a skeleton sequence. One welcome email, two or three nurture emails, and a clear way for people to reach you. That's it.

2. Build in accessibility from the start. Bullet points, short videos, audio options - meet your clients where their brains work best.

3. Automate without losing the human touch. Tools can handle the sending. Your voice still needs to come through in every word.

4. Normalize different paces. Tell people directly that it's okay to take their time. That one sentence does more for trust than almost anything else on this list.

Taking care of your clients after they buy is essential.

You don't have to start from scratch every week wi You don't have to start from scratch every week with your social media marketing strategy.

The people who show up consistently aren't necessarily creating more. They've built a system that does more with what they already have. Two practices make that possible: batching and recycling.

Batching means creating multiple pieces of content in one focused session. Your brain gets into a groove, decisions happen faster, and you walk away with a week or month of content without context-switching every day.

Recycling means that content you've already created doesn't disappear after it posts once. It goes into a bank and gets used again - reformatted, rescheduled, or repurposed across platforms - so your best ideas keep working for you long after the original post.

Here's how I actually do it: I do a monthly batching session - one focused block of time where I create four or five posts per category (educational, credibility, entertaining, promotional). That's roughly a month of content across all content types, created in a single sitting. Those posts get scheduled and then added to the recycling bank once they've run.

Here's where it gets good: once I have 13 or more posts built up in a category, I can start automating the repurposing. my scheduling tool handles the rotation, and my monthly session shifts from "create everything" to "review what's queued, make any edits, and add a handful of fresh posts."

You don't have to build all of this overnight. Start with one batching session this month, create four or five posts. Schedule them. Put them somewhere they can be reused.

Do that consistently for a few months and you'll have a library. Once that library hits critical mass, the system runs on momentum instead of willpower.

Social media doesn't have to feel like a constant creative emergency... A little structure up front goes a long way.

Which sounds more like your current reality: starting from scratch every time, or do you have some kind of system already?

The welcome email says "you're in the right place" and celebrates the decision your client just made.

The next four nurture emails reassure, set expectations, offer a quick win, share tips for different learning styles, and remind your client that support is easy to reach.

The last email invites them to stay connected - your community, your social spaces, whatever keeps the relationship going after the transaction ends.

Want an easy add-on? Build a simple Welcome Center. A Notion page or Google Doc with your FAQs, links, and resources in one spot works just as well as anything fancy.
