The Notes
Foreword: This episode is a bit different than the others in our series thus far… in a good way. We do talk about how Dena developed Girls Rule and what drove her to do it, however so much of this particular podcast focuses on how Girls Rule helps to develop our girls into the leaders of today and tomorrow. The notes below focus on the business side of it, but cannot begin to encompass the breadth and depth of what Girls Rule has to offer, so be sure to listen to the full episode – you don't want to miss it!
- Dena suffered a stroke at the age of 27, and she used that as her “blessed interruption” to really be able to take stock of where her life was and was headed which in turn allowed her to make a shift into the life coaching business.
“We’ve all had this moment of disempowerment in our lives.” ~ Dena Patton
- What drove Dena was the question, “Why aren’t we teaching our girls what we teach our women,” when it came to things like empowerment, self-care, leadership, and true intentional self development tools to navigate life.
- Although Dena always knew that she wanted to work with women to help coach and empower them, there were actually several steps that her business went through in order to become the Girls Rule as we know it today.
- What solidified Dena’s quest to empower girls and continue down her path when it became tougher were the statistics surrounding how girls in Arizona are treated:
- Teen Pregnancy Rate
- Self-Harm/Suicide Rate
- Dropout Rate
- Sex Trafficking
- One aspect of Girls Rule that helps to encourage girls to follow their dreams are the Dream Labs. Where the focus is on the girls articulating their dreams and then helping them to connect to resources that could help to realize them.
- 7 tenets on finding balance and maintaining health as an entrepreneur:
- Manage your time well (eg. Only work between set hours in the day)
- Know how to say “No”
- Schedule self-care weekly and hold yourself accountable to those
- Sleep 8 hours
- Nurture your spirit and faith, whatever that is for you
- Live from your greatness, not your smallness
- Schedule play time
